I’m Sue Darby, the designer, coder, and sole operator behind Frozen Arctic Services, LLC and a diverse network of specialized sites. Based in the heart of the Matanuska Valley in Palmer, Alaska, I spend my days bridging the gap between high-tech automation and hand-stitched craftsmanship.
My Journey: From BASIC to the Last Frontier
My relationship with technology started early. Back in elementary school, I got my hands on a TI-99/4A computer and taught myself BASIC programming. As the digital world evolved, I did too—teaching myself HTML as a young adult.
My love for understanding how things are built led me to pursue a rich, multi-faceted path. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management & Technology (with a concentration in Business Applications), an Associate degree in Computer Science, and even a certificate in Fashion Design. Over my career, I’ve worked as a technical writer, business automation specialist, data analyst, and state services technician—building systems to make complex workflows effortless for teams and non-profits.
I’m also incredibly proud to have raised a son who went on to become a rocket scientist! Living in Alaska, surrounded by rugged peaks and resilient local communities, inspires me to keep learning, adapting, and creating.

People often ask why I run so many different sites instead of sticking to just one niche. The truth is, my brain doesn’t do well in a single box. I love 3D printing as much as I love machine embroidery; I geek out over automation workflows just as much as I love science fiction or historical miniatures.

Why I Do What I Do: The Blended Strategy
At its heart, my business operates on what I call a “blended strategy.”
I design and publish scalable digital products—such as digital patterns, STL files for 3D printing, ebooks, and automated workflows—to keep the lights on and build a sustainable livelihood.
But I also preserve space for creative, hands-on physical commissions. Operating specialized machinery like my 3D printers, machine embroidery machines, and vinyl cutters brings me pure, nostalgic joy. This balance keeps my work sustainable while ensuring that my soul remains entirely in every piece of art or utility item I make.
Adapting and Thriving: Creation Beyond Limits
Running an entire network of sites is no small feat for anyone, but my journey has an extra layer of adaptation. I live with chronic physical pain and a visual disability that makes traditional working setups a major hurdle.
But I’ve never been one to sit idle. Where some see a barrier, I saw a puzzle to be solved.
Because sitting at a standard desk or staring at bright screens for too long triggers intense physical pain, I have completely reimagined how a business can run. I use advanced artificial intelligence and business automation as my virtual hands and eyes. When my vision is blurred, I use voice commands and speech-to-text to write product descriptions or outline new coding projects while lying on the couch. I write custom automation recipes (using tools like Make.com) that handle my marketing, push products to my “mall” site, and manage logistics behind the scenes.
My physical limits have actually forced me to become a better systems builder. Every site in this network is living proof that with the right technology and a resilient spirit, we can maintain our independence, build incredible things, and share our unique voices with the world.
